Leaving America Behind

July 12, 2012 is approaching quickly.  Just look at the calendar on the right.  I can’t believe that something I have wanted to do for the past 20 years is finally going to happen.  I am taking my children to live in Greece for one year.  We are going to live on the island of Ikaria, which is in the Agean Sea, east of Athens and very close to Turkey.  It’s the island of both my paternal grandfather and grandmother.  My father was born there and came to America when he was 6 years old.  We are going to spend the year connecting to our heritage, learning to live a simpler life.

I’m not much of a writer, nor right now do I have much time to write.  However, I wanted to begin this blog so that I will have a way to connect with my family and friends when we are separated by over 5000 miles.  I will try to explain why we have chosen to take this adventure, what we hope to gain, and why my blog is called, “No Gas ‘Til Tuesday.”  I hope to share the story of my father’s journey to America as well as all of the reasons I felt that living in Greece was a goal of mine.  I am confident that over the year I will have many humorous stories to share because nothing is done in Greece the way it is in America.

Only a month left…your time in the US will pass too quickly for your friends that will miss you. I will look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks Lonna…I know this next month is going to fly by. I will miss everyone too! Very much so. Look on the page and find the “follow” button–think it’s at the top. If you click it, then every time I post you’ll get an email update letting you know.

Okay…I am already tearing up after reading your first entry…..now this is real. I told Tom yesterday that I can’t imagine not having you here…not that we talk every day, but I know you’re there. I am so excited for you that you are getting to live out your dream and even though you are scared, I have no doubt you will look back and say it was a once in a lifetime experience. Love You!!

Guess you are just going to have to get really good at writing emails! I’m excited for the year, but I don’t know that the reality has sunk in yet. I’m sure there will be a lot of tears before we leave Amy. I’m just really hoping to spend some quality time with you before we leave. Love you, too!

Wow. Only a month to go! You and your family are really going to be missed! Not to mention the obvious that Daniel will be lost with out Zach! It’ll be fun to read your blog. Be safe over there and come back sooner rather than later. Love you all!

We will miss you, but I feel it is very important to follow your heart, and not leave what ifs. We will follow your blog and keep in touch, and keep you all in our prayers. ( and invite Chris over for dinner). Have a blast!

    Hi Jackie,
Okay…huge lump in throat already! Don’t underestimate your writing skills. I heard your voice through your blog already and I am pretty sure that constitutes you as being a good writer. I am so looking forward to reading all about your experiences. It makes me wish I would have done this with my kids and taken them to Israel to live. Oh well…I am way too late on that opportunity but YOU aren’t. You are so brave..I totally admire you!

Thank you for your vote of confidence! I haven’t written anything since college…that’s 20 years ago now! Glad you’ll be following the blog…will probably be a story or two that involve old Greek ladies and their chin hair! 😉

We will continue to learn the language and make you proud! It would be wonderful if you could travel with us–maybe you can plan to visit us and take us to Kos with you. 🙂 I hope to spend time with you before I leave as well!
